“When I first started playing with chains for my runway creations, I was experimenting with taking traditional silk-scarf motifs, like linked-chain patterns, and transforming them into some- thing 

three-dimensional,” explains Rousteing. “Since then, we’ve seen how that new Balmain Chain works as well for the house’s accessory collections as for our runway offerings. For Spring 2021’s La Royale design, I wanted to push the chain idea even farther, by taking it full circle—here, we’re riffing on the type of iconic, super-feminine frames that legendary French and Italian film stars would have once almost automatically paired with a silk scarf. So, our Balmain chain has managed to return to its original inspiration, in a way.”
